Frequently Asked Questions
The Interfraternity Council(IFC) is the governing body of the 18 national fraternity chapters affiliated with Cal Poly. Fraternities are social organizations for male students who share common values, goals, and interests. They offer opportunities for leadership development, community service, academic support, and lifelong friendships through various events and activities.
What is IFC?
Formal recruitment or “rush” is the time when chapters intake new members. It happens during the Fall and Winter quarters(October and January). Some chapters will also offer informal recruitment during the Spring Quarter.
What is IFC Recruitment?
When is Fall Rush 2025?
Dates to be determined soon.
Registration for Fall Rush 2025 will open soon. All chapters will be able to access your PNM profile, you do not need to register with individual chapters.
How do I sign up for rush?
What events are required?
The only requirement for PNMs is to register for recruitment and attend the Mandatory Information Session. We strongly encourage all PNMs to attend the Kick-Off BBQ.
What is the Recruitment Kick-Off BBQ?
The Kick-OFF BBQ is an event held on Dexter Lawn that marks the official start of rush. At this event, PNMs can meet and interact with members of each chapter and receive" “rush cards” which include the rush schedules of each chapter. All 18 chapters will have a booth and tri-tip sandwiches will be available for participating PNMs.
How does the rush schedule work?
Rush is scheduled into two consecutive weekends, the first is Open Weekend in which all events are open to any interested PNM. The second is Invite Weekend, in which you will receive direct communication from chapters with an invite to attend.
What happens at a rush event?
Rush events are designed for chapters to learn more about you and for you to learn more about them. Feel free to ask any questions you have about their specific chapter or Greek Life in general. Examples of rush events include backyard BBQs, sports days, game nights, interviews, and more.
How Does Bid Night Work?
You may receive an invitation to attend bid night from one or multiple chapters. PNMs have the option of accepting a bid that evening or waiting up to 24 hours to make a decision. You may only accept one bid!
Who do I contact with questions about rush?
If you have questions for a specific chapter during the rush week, the best person to contact is their recruitment chair or the chapter’s President. For more general questions, please contact Anthony Brandi, Vice President of Recruitment, at recruitment.cpifc@gmail.com
Are Fraternerties Expensive?
The perception of fraternities may be that they are only for well-to-do students, but Greek membership is actually quite affordable, and the fees go to services that will enhance the student’s college experience. Many students choose to work to help pay their dues to the chapter. To assist members, chapters may offer payment plans or scholarships. The Greek experience is an investment in the student’s future. The skills and experience gained through participation in the chapter will continue to benefit members years after graduation.
Will working while in school conflict with participation in a fraternity?
Fraternities and sororities recognize that it is important for members to meet their financial obligations and many students will work to help finance their education. Working students can still take advantage of the opportunities available in the Greek community.
How much time does it take?
The time commitment varies from chapter to chapter. The first quarter is the most intensive as new members learn the history of the organization and participate in activities that connect the student to campus. After initiation, members’ commitments vary. Each chapter has weekly meetings and plans various events throughout the year (social, service, philanthropies, initiation). The more the student puts into the chapter, the more he will benefit from being a member.
What about hazing?
All national governing bodies for fraternities prohibit all forms of hazing. Hazing, or any activity that injures, degrades or disgraces any student, is not tolerated. All allegations are investigated. If you ever feel your student may be participating in or subjected to inappropriate activities, please contact the coordinator of fraternity and sorority affairs at (805) 756-7263. To report Hazing fill out the Hazing Report Form click here.
